Sciatica refers to pain, inflammation and neurological sensations associated with the sciatic nerve; a big nerve that travels from the lower back, the buttocks and down the back of each leg. Sciatica occurs when the nerve or nerve roots are compressed or irritated.
Sciatica often feels like:
Burning or aching pain in the buttocks
Pain at the back of the thigh or to the calf and foot depending on the severity
Sometimes pins and needles or numbness
Pain that is sometimes worse with bending forwards, lifting, coughing, sneezing or bearing down
Loss of power or strength to the muscles of the leg and foot
The most common causes of sciatica include:
Intervertebral disc bulging in the lumbar spine
Bony changes associated with osteoarthritis
Severe sciatica in association with significant leg weakness, foot drop, and bowel or bladder changes may require immediate medical intervention such as surgery.
The Osteopaths at Fundamental Health can diagnose sciatica after a detailed medical history and physical examination. In some cases, further imaging or referral may be indicated.
Our practitioners use a variety of hands-on techniques that may help reduce sciatica by reducing muscle spasm, reducing myofascial tension and improving overall joint mobility. Pain management strategies, lifestyle advice, and rehabilitation exercises such as clinical pilates are also part of managing sciatica pain and preventing future reoccurrence.
If you have symptoms suggestive of sciatica and would like to book in with one of our osteopaths you can contact the clinic on 02 6193 2354, or book online.
