Back pain affects 1 in 6 Australians, this is over 15% of the population or approximately 4 million people.
Did you know that the WHO /World Health Organization endorses acupuncture for the treatment of chronic back pain? The application of acupuncture for back pain (including sciatica and sacral-iliac joint dysfunction) can be effective for easing pain, increasing mobility, and reducing neuropathy.
How does it work?
Applying acupuncture to key points in the large thick back and paraspinal muscles can release pressure on the micro blood supply increasing oxygen to the muscles - improving overall muscle health, strength, and function. In addition, by relieving pressure on the nerves by releasing shortened muscle fibres can also reduce pain and neurological symptoms.
Inserting acupuncture needles into shortened muscle fibres can also help the muscles to regain their original length assisting the joint to settle back into a neutral position aiding to restore posture.
Acupuncture has been found to reduce inflammation and it also stimulates the release of the body’s natural endorphins increasing the feeling of well-being and assisting to block pain.
How many appointments do I need?
A course of treatment is required for optimal results, with treatments ranging from 1-2 sessions per week for the duration.
What can you do in between acupuncture treatments?
Gentle exercise such as walking.
Bending with the knees when lifting - and not lifting beyond your ability.
Watch your form when working out.
Heat bags in the morning when the muscles are cold and stiff.
Core strengthening with Pilates.
Application of non-chemical liniments such as Chinese herbal liniments and plasters can help with pain management..
Make time. Rushing often ends in hurting oneself.
